Dolphins, Sharks, Goats, Crabs, Dogs, Turltes, Jellyfish and Gators…Oh My!

That title pretty much sums up our 2 weeks in Edisto Beach. The End.

Just joking! We have been on Edisto Beach since Thursday, October 24th and we leave tomorrow, November 6th. On the way to Edisto we stopped off in Greenville and had dinner with our friend/son Matt Auter who was there for work. (Jerry was “helping to raise” Matt when we got engaged. Matt came with the marriage. He calls me mom. He is in his 30’s. That is the super short version.) Always nice to see family/friends along the way especially when it is neither of your home bases.

Edisto Beach in a word…quiet! So quiet. In another word, remote. Final word, beautiful. I am certain if we had been here “during the season” I would not be using the word quiet to describe the beach/island. The other 2 words would not change. There is a grocery store, a gas station and a Subway on the beach. Besides that, there are a handful of locally owned restaurants/bars and shops and that is really it. Closest hospital is in Charleston over an hour a way. Closest pharmacy is over an hour away. If you forget it and Bi-Lo (grocery store) doesn’t have it, hopefully you can live without it or you are driving.

We are staying in a 4th floor condo in a Wyndham resort. We are a couple blocks from the beach and have had access to about 4 pools across the island that Wyndham owns. It has been a great stay and a perfect spot for us. Jerry has fished, I have read and swam (in the pool, not the ocean) and we have walked the beach numerous days. We have seen dolphins, crabs, sharks (little ones), dogs, jellyfish and goats while walking the beach. Yes, you read that right. Goats. 7 day old goats. 3 of them. I can still hear Jerry saying “are those…goats?!?!” They were so stinking cute!

As for the gator mentioned in the title. The property has lovely signs that say: Do Not Feed the Gators or Snakes. It took everything that I had when I saw those on October 25th to not high tail it off the island in the car and leave Jerry and all our crap behind. Those two things are my worst nightmare individually. Combined?! Oh hell no! At this point (I have 1 more sleep here people!) I have seen neither of those critters. Jerry however has seen what we assume to be the same gator 2 days in a row by the pond at the clubhouse. What the hell dude? Is he waiting on an ice cream cone? A coffee? What? He lives in the same pond with the cute turtles on the property. Cute ninja turtles and bad Mr. Gator. Ugh. I am going to pretend he doesn’t live here and then when I vacate tomorrow he can have the place back 🙂

We have gone in to Charleston twice and both times we have met up with friends and were shown some of the sights of Charleston (Thank you Harriger’s and Terrell!) Charleston has LOADS of history, really good food, cute shops and public market, and very nice parks. It seemed like every time we were in the car we were crossing another bridge and seeing a different body of water or island. Very different landscape from the midwest.

In the morning we pack the car, work a half day and hit the road. Next stop Savannah, GA. We legit will be there less than 24 hours before we are off to Atlanta to see Jerry’s family. After 2 nights there we will be off to Metro Detroit to stay with some great kids and pretend we know how to parent for a few days. Always fun and a challenge wrapped up into one.

Thanks for following along. More later, NB
