It seems funny to say we are settled when we are homeless, but it feels like we are. Metro Detroit was my home for 8 years from 2003-2011. This is where we first lived together, where we got engaged, and where we got married. A part of me will always feel like this is home.
It would have been easy to come “home” and to eat at only places we felt comfortable in. To go to the places that we know. To walk the trails that we used to. If you think that we often take the comfortable route, you are wrong 🙂 While this place feels like home, we have discovered so many new to us places in the few weeks we have been here. From high school football games 24 hours post-discharge to our first visit to Redcoat Tavern for burgers, we have gone off “our” beaten path. We have spent our afternoon walks exploring new trails, some of which I had driven past 100’s of times while living here but had never taken the time to walk them. We went to the zoo on the 30th and it was Jerry’s first ever visit there. We have found a way to live and explore even during recovery and for that we are grateful.
Speaking of recovery, tomorrow marks 3 weeks post surgery. Wow! Jerry is doing amazing. He was discharged on Thursday, September 19th. He has been working full time since Monday, September 23rd. On Saturday, September 28th we walked 2 miles continuously. We are SO thankful that recovery has been this good to us. He still is not cleared to drive and has been adhering to that rule very well. Incisions are healing and his range of motion in his right arm is improving each day. We are hopeful that he gets released from the surgeon tomorrow and that our first visit at the cardiologists office goes well on Friday.
If you had talked with me prior to surgery one of my big post surgery fears was that Jerry would be on blood thinners for life and how we would balance that change. We have been so lucky that Jerry’s INR has stayed between 2 and 3 consistently. Yes, we pay attention to what he eats and yes, it has been an adjustment for him to take pills each day. However, the best advice we were given in the hospital is to stay consistent over a week and to not stress out about being consistent day to day. Best. Advice. Ever.
If things go according to plan (we do have a plan…it is a loose one, but it is a plan none the less) we will be leaving Metro Detroit on October 19th. Until then we will enjoy our home that we are settled in.
More later,
NB
